private pay q&a

Some benefits of being private pay include having longer treatment sessions and appointments that are one-on-one with your therapist, giving them time to utilize a holistic approach to look at stress, environment, sleep, hydration, etc. to acknowledge the multiple factors that can impact systems.

 By not going through insurance, you do not have to worry about:

  • Being limited in the number of visits.
  • Being cut off from therapy even if you haven’t achieved your goals yet.
  • Being told that you can only spend your treatment on one area during your current plan of care.
  • Being unclear about how much you will have to pay or how much insurance will cover. No confusion over deductibles, copays, coinsurance, etc. Just straightforward information! 😊

No, Iowa is a direct access state, you do not need a physician’s referral to attend physical therapy.

Yes, even if your physician’s referral specifies a certain clinic, you can choose your location.

No, you do not need to have pain to participate in physical therapy. We prefer for you to come in before your symptoms are affecting your daily life. We love working with people who want to be proactive and learn ways to take care of themselves even/especially if they aren’t experiencing any pain!

Dave M.
I didn't know if Dr. Palen was going to be able to help me as the pain in my arm was so incredibly bad. During my first meeting with her she had figured out what was wrong, got to work, and gave me some exercises to help with the issue. Now after a few visits the pain is nearly gone. She is a godsend. I don't know what I would have done had I not met her.

  • In the evaluation we will spend most of our time getting an understanding of your symptoms. This includes getting a good picture of how/when things started, what your symptoms feel like, and what impacts them. We will then measure your joint range of motion and the strength of different muscles as well as observing movement patterns to monitor for compensations with your daily tasks. We will start some beginning exercises to determine what will suit you best.
  • Build on your strength, endurance, and mobility to improve your symptoms and ability to participate in the activities that are important to you. A consistent progression each visit within a comfortable range for you.
  • Building on your improvements to decrease the chance of your pain returning. Being proactive in continuing to progress what you have accomplished and solidifying your understanding of how to stay healthy after discharging from therapy.
